After a 12-week-long exercise program, study participants underwent MRI brain scans and working memory tests before and after single sessions of light to moderate intensity workouts. The researchers have seen that the ones who saw improvements in cognition and functional brain connectivity after single sessions of moderate intensity physical activity also have seen the biggest long-term gains in cognition connectivity.

The study used flat cycles that had electric pedals, allowing the participants to apply their own pressure to turn the pedals or to let the pedals do the work. This feature allowed the researcher to keep pedal speed persistent while only changing the heart rate between conditions of light and moderate intensity activity.

There are a lot of questions that cognitive neuroscientists can help answer – from how much exercise to what types of exercise are optimal for brain health and how to shift from young, healthy populations to older, at-risk ones.
